Commando is a restaurant and wine bar located in the beautiful seaside village of Mellieħa. Perched on a hilltop at the historic centre of town, Commando is housed within a 300 year old stone building that has been the workplace of our forefathers for more than 80 years.
Chef Damian Ciappara draws inspiration from his surroundings, using fresh local ingredients to create simple yet elegant dishes. Trained abroad under Michelin starred chefs, he brings a passion for good food paired with a dedication to supporting our diverse community. Damian and his team work closely with local producers to deliver a seasonally influenced menu that celebrates Mediterranean flavours. Fresh fish and seafood, sun ripened vegetables, rustic pasta dishes, and homemade desserts. Damian carries on the legacy of his Great Grandfather, who first served humble meals and refreshments to the community back in the 1930’s. At the time of the war, this family’s gracious hospitality earned them the patronage of the Royal Marine Commandos who were stationed at the nearby camp at Għadira Bay. It was these men who eventually christened our establishment with the name we carry to this day. Having carefully crafted a wooden sign which read “Commando Bar”, they carried it up the hill and secured it in place above our door as a gesture of camaraderie.
Commando remains a place rich in history, with countless family stories having been passed down through the years. Today, our family is still known for our warm hospitality and the genuine interest in sharing our rich Maltese culture. Join us to savour our flavourful Mediterranean dishes while enjoying a bottle of wine from our eclectic wine list. We always have a few bottles of our favourite wines open, which you can discover by the glass. We look forward to welcoming you.
